A Memory of Lizzie: The Cat Scene

Stage light is slightly dimmed, spotlight on Frances, Rachel, and Eliza. Other actors freeze. Music is played in the back to enhace the tension and suspense while Frances speaks.)
Frances: Once Lizzie Borden was entertaining friends of hers and Mrs. Borden’s cat kept walking in the room.
Rachel: Mrs. Borden’s cat? S It’s too sweet
Eliza: I agree.
Frances: Sweet it was; and each time Lizzie put the car out, sure enough, in he’d come again.
(Stage lights dim as Frances speaks, spotlight on Frances)
Frances: Lizzle Borden finally excused herself and went downstairs taking the cart with her—She put the poor thing on the chopping-block
Eliza: Gasps
Rachel: No!
(Rachel runs off to left wing)
Frances: and chopped its head off.
(Eliza drops a plate in her hand and screams)
Frances: Mrs. Borden wondered for days where the cat was—all she talked about. Finally Lizzie said, “You go downstairs and you’ll find your cat.”

(Spotlight off, main lights come on)
