A Memory of Lizzie: End of Unit Reflection

Amusing and humorous acts, talks, behavior, aspects, make us laugh. Usually, these elements provide us with entertainment because they are not the way they are supposed to be. For example, many people would consider a male dressed as a female, funny, this is because it usually isn’t seen or expected. Thus, it crease a sense of humor.

Similar to us, acts, talks, behavior or aspects one can relate themselves to will make them laugh. For instance, if a teenager cracks a joke amongst their friends about their math teacher, their friends would be most likely to have a greater response and find it funnier than the teenager’s parents. The teenager’s parents would might still laugh and find it funny, but the friends will find it funnier as they see and interact with the teacher everyday.

As mentioned before, some things are funny to different people because one cannot always relate to the topic worked upon. If they can connect to the act, talk, behavior or aspect, they are already kind of placed in the character’s shoes; therefore they will understand the story better. However, the audience members that cannot related to the topic, will have to place themselves in the character’s shoes, and then they will get an idea of what is going on, however by the time it happens, the pun of the joke will no emphasized upon anymore, and the audience will not find anything funny.

While creating humor and making funny acts, talks, and behavior, many times the comedian will use religion, culture, races and other ethical aspects to assist them. Often times, the comedian would just use an element from a religious, cultural and ethnic background and race and exaggerate it to make people laugh, but any audience members can related themselves to the act, talk, behavior and/or aspect talking about and feel like everyone is laughing at them, because they are unexpected. However, this was not the case to begin with. For example, many people around the world make fun of Asian for having relatively smaller eyes, compared to Americans or Canadians. These jokes usually do no target any particular person, nevertheless are only factors to make people laugh. However, A Japanese person might come across this jokes, take it personally and find it very offensive. On the other hand, humor can also unify people. For example a person with interests in basketball and a person with interests in music may not be in a companion ship, however maybe a light joke about the both basketball players and saxophonists could make them both laugh themselves and each other. Sharing a laugh with someone else, definitely unify him and/or her.

Sharing a light joke with friends and comedy are two different things. When one is sharing a joke with their friends, he/she will know how they might react to the joke knowing them, their culture, race, religion, sense of humor etc. However, when humor, jokes and sketches are created professionally, the comedian must be aware of the outcomes and the responses the audience might have. Therefore, it would be safe to have “ethics” in comedy by which the comedian could follow in order for a good response from the audience. However, if the audience does not have a good sense of humor and is easily offended, chances are that they would not go to the comedy club at all so I believe “ethics” to comedy is not necessary.

While creating humor, comedians/ performers use different comedic genres and devices to help them. There’s dark comedy, which is associated with aspects like drugs, death, terrorism, rape, and war. Blue comedy; is comedy related to sexism and racism. Stereotypes are used as an aspect of humor this is called character comedy. The most common type of comedy is when the audience fine the act, talk, behavior, aspect funny when the comedian embarrasses themselves or does an inappropriate act. There is also a type of comedy called “deadpan comedy” where the comedian cracks a joke without changing their tone, expression and emotion. Improvisational comedy is when the comedian does not plan their routines out. There is also insult comedy where the comedian is a little more offensive. The comedian/ performer would be making fun of at the audience or the other performers. Mockumentary is a parody version of the act, behavior, video or music. There is also musical comedy, observational comedy, physical comedy, prop comedy, spoof, sitcom, sketch, surreal comedy, tropical comedy, and word play. Also, comedians uses comedic device repetition, hyperbole, understatement, double entendre, pun, juxtaposition, mistaken identity, taboo, and slapstick.
