A Memory of Lizzie: Costume Design

The two characters that I have chosen to design costumes for are Lizzie Borden and Frances.

Stage 1: I will be researching about the character's personalities and the specification about their costume from the script.

Lizzie Borden:

Lizzie Borden is an angry, high-tempered character. Her personality involves her into wearing mysterious colors. She also mentions that she wore blue on the day she murdered her parents. Therefore, the dress I have designed for her must be in blue.  The following designs inspire the outfit I want to design:

Frances:

Frances seems to be a very simple girl with a lot of knowledge. She knows about the story of Lizzie Borden too. Therefore, her costume should be a shade of beige, something that portrays her subtleness and significance in the play. The following the image inspire my costume for her:

Stage 2: At this stage, I use the pictures that inspire me and sketch out a design of the costume I want to create for the characters.

Sketch for Lizzie's costume:

Notes:
  • ·    I added in a bow at the back to make her seem more like a child, which she was when she murdered her mother
  •     The puffy-ness and the color show the period of the play.

Sketch for Frances' costume:

Notes:

  •  The frills help signify her role in the play
  •   The frills show youth and innocence which show their age

Stage 3: This stage is for the final design, with the color.

Lizzie:

Notes:
  •        The blue represents the blue she wore when she murdered her mother.
  •        The material would be in cotton as they are not from a high class

Notes:
  •  I added in a brown belt at the waist to help keep the shape of a girl/ women.
